Texas Medical Center Orchestra heals through music
The musicians of the Texas Medical Center Orchestra have impacted lives through medicine and music for two decades, and in celebration of entering a new era, artistic director and conductor Libi Lebel has created a time capsule of sorts with programs surrounding current global issues, such as female empowerment, climate change and immigration.

Kicking off its 20th season, “Dream of America” will focus on the latter, honoring the land of opportunity as well as the diversity in Houston, which is reflected in the full spectrum of nationalities within the orchestra.
The ensemble, composed of nonprofessional musicians, will present the concert on Sunday at the Hobby Center and again on Nov. 9 at Miller Outdoor Theatre joined by artists from the Mitsi Dancing School. Underwritten by Texas Children’s Hospital and supported by the city of Houston through the Miller Theatre Advisory Board, the program will feature two works by immigrant composers — Erich Korngold’s “Overture to the Sea Hawk” and Igor Stravinsky’s “The Firebird Suite” — alongside the Houston premiere of Peter Boyer’s “Ellis Island: The Dream of America,” showcasing theater students from The Emery/Weiner School.
